Post-Secondary Information

The aim of this site is to provide Rick Hansen students with relevant information on career/education planning, post-secondary education - including entrance/admission requirements, application deadlines, and scholarships & grants. (See Links below.)

TRY. The Responsibility is Yours. While RHS counsellors are here to support and assist students with their growth and development, the ultimate responsibility lies with the students. That said, students are strongly encouraged to verify information by going directly to websites of each post-secondary institution and other sites listed on the RHS website. Students who require additional support and/or assitance can see Mrs. Wickman and Mrs. Fawcett in the counselling centre or Mrs. Myers in the Career Centre.

APPLYING TO POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS - counsellors recommend that you apply to post-secondary institution(s) before mid-December. Direct links to BC and Canadian colleges and universities below. (NOTE: UFV accepts applications beginning October 1)

The following two larger scholarships will require you to first apply to the counsellors at school over the next couple of months,  and we will nominate  one student for each of these to be endorsed by our school.    Please let us know if you're interested so we can get you the application information.

The Schulich Leader Scholarships are prestigious entrance scholarships awarded to high school graduates who are enrolling in STEM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).  Nominees must possess at least two of the three criteria: academic excellence, leadership, and/or  financial need.  Our school will  nominate one student for this scholarship so, if you're interested, your must first fill out our school's screening application by December 15th (in the Counselling Centre), and then a school committee will narrow down the applicant pool and conduct interviews with the finalists during the first couple of weeks of January, before selecting the nominee by the beginning of February.  Once the school nominates a student, he/she will have to complete the application by mid February.

The new BC Excellence Scholarship is a new scholarship that recognizes well-rounded BC graduates who have demonstrated community service, both inside and outside of their schools, and shown aptitude and commitment to their chosen career paths.  Each school is able to nominate one student for this scholarship.    Nominees must maintain a 'B' average in Grades 11 and 12 (final course marks), have two references (one from your community and one from your school), and a written statement describing what motivated you to get involved in community service  a volunteer activity.  If  you wish to be nominated, please complete the required application by mid February.  www.bced.gov.bc.ca/awards A selection committee will select 55 winners from around the province who will each receive a $5000 scholarship voucher.

District Authority Awards:

Students can apply in October to complete a major 100 hr. project in a non-academic area (physical activity, volunteer community service, applied skills, fine arts, second languages, technical trades, etc.) to showcase their skills.  Projects are adjudicated in April and those marks, in addition to marks for courses taken in your Grade 12 year, will be combined for a final score.  Winners of these awards receive $1250.

BC Achievement Scholarships:

BC Achievement Scholarships recognize the top 8000 graduates in the province. The Ministry will determine recipients based on achievement in Grades 10, 11, and 12 courses that satisfy 2004 Graduation Program requirements, including elective courses. Grad Transitions will not be included.

Post Secondary Scholarships:

Post Secondary Institutions have scholarships for new students.  Go to the institution’s website and look for Scholarships and Awards.  The amount of the scholarship will vary and each institution will list their criteria.  For most awards, an application and a resume and/or essay are needed.  Carefully check the deadlines and the criteria for each scholarship.
